Drainage installation and groundworks
Groundworks is the other half of this business and has been since 2009. New drainage runs, land drains, soakaways, excavation, levelling and hardstanding, with our own machines rather than whatever the hire yard has left.
What we install
- New foul and surface water runs. From a single extension connection through to a full site, laid to fall, bedded and surrounded properly, with inspection chambers where they belong rather than where they were easiest.
- Land drains and French drains. For ground that stays wet, water running off a slope onto a property, or a garden that never dries out. Perforated pipe, stone, membrane, backfill, all in the right order and the right way up.
- Soakaways. Sized on a percolation test rather than a guess, which is the whole difference on this clay ground.
- Connections and chambers. New chambers, rodding access, and connections into an existing run or into the public sewer.
- Excavation, levelling and hardstanding. Site clearance, muck away, dig and level for a base, stone and blind, concrete and driveway sub base.
- Plant hire. Machines with an operator when a job needs the kit and the hands rather than just the kit.
To South West Water specification
Where a new run is going to be adopted, or where a build needs to satisfy building control, it has to be put in the way the water authority wants it: the right pipe, the right bedding and surround, the right chamber, the right fall, tested and recorded. We build to that spec as a matter of course, because the alternative is a sign off refused after the trench has been closed. It is a great deal cheaper to do it correctly the first time than to open a finished drive back up.

Ground you have to know
This is not one region, it is four kinds of digging. Dartmoor granite around Yelverton and Walkhampton means rock near the surface and a breaker on the machine. The Culm Measures north of Okehampton give you a stiff heavy clay that holds water and refuses to percolate. Around Plymouth, Saltash and Liskeard you are on Devonian slate, the killas, hard to cut and slow to drain once it weathers. And the old mining ground toward Gunnislake and Caradon can hide made ground and old workings under a perfectly ordinary looking field. We price after we have seen the ground, not before.
Surface water is not a small detail
Most of the trouble we get called back to on other people's installations is surface water. A soakaway sized by eye on clay ground fills and stays full. A downpipe run straight into a foul drain overloads it every time it rains hard. A new patio laid to fall toward the house instead of away from it moves the problem into the building. Getting this right at the start costs very little more than getting it wrong, and it is the part that shows up in the first wet winter rather than on the day.
What you get
A price agreed in writing before we start, our own plant on site so the job does not stall waiting on hire, the run cameraed where it makes sense so you can see what is under your ground, and the surface reinstated rather than left as a spoil heap and a promise.

Drainage installation and repair
Drainage installation and repair is essential for maintaining a functioning and efficient system to prevent water damage and improve overall drainage in a property.

Ground excavation and leveling
Ground excavation and leveling involves removing soil and debris from a site, as well as shaping and smoothing the ground to prepare it for construction.

French drain installation
The French drain installation process involves digging a trench, laying a perforated pipe, adding gravel and fabric, and backfilling the trench to create a drainage system that redirects groundwater away from a specific area.
